A written language appears only in Sumer in the south of Mesopotamia (the Mesopotamian lands) about 3,500 to 3,000 years B.C. Egypt had its own writing system even before the Early Kingdom period (3150 BC).
Independently of the Middle East and Europe, writing first appeared in Mesoamerica with the Maya tribes around 250 B.C. Writing also emerged independently in China, according to some accounts as early as 500 BC. The writing in China developed from the bone divination by priests in 1200 BC and seems to have emerged independently, as there is no evidence of cultural relations between China and Mesopotamia at that time.
